Kandle

Story

Kandle can weave magic so powerful because she feels it too, she is out here in the darkness with us. A true music industry veteran, she has been a powerhouse in the scene with an impressive career spanning over a decade. Kandle’s new album is a crescendo of all her years immersed in music and an intimate knowledge of the many ways this industry, this world can break your body and heart. Arguably her strongest and heaviest album yet, one that is completely vulnerable and unwaveringly honest; an ode to the darkness that surrounds us and the connections we find in it together.

With her newest album, Kandle aims to make you come and come apart. Weaving a thrum of trip-hop downbeats, brilliant, gut wrenching lyrics, and her signature, sultry, haunting vocals, she casts spells that lure us off our solitary, mundane paths. She knows too well the darkness we all face, and with these songs she reaches out to all those who wish to be understood but feel they aren’t. Kandle can weave this magic so powerfully because she feels it too, she is out here in the darkness with us.

Under the cover of night and shadows, we lay bare all our deepest fears and despairs, revelling in the blurring of lines between dream and reality, pain and pleasure. Through Kandle’s songs, we unfurl our grief, our mourning for a future that will never be while we attune to the profound knowing that the future was only ever an illusion, these fleeting moments of pain and pleasure are all we get.

Kandle’s a powerhouse in the industry, with a career spanning over 12 years. She’s had to overcome all manner of obstacles, from abuse to chronic illness; and yet, she shows absolutely no sign of slowing down. Kandle was first signed at the age of 19 and toured extensively through Europe, Japan, China and North America. Kandle is now self-produced and independent for the first time in her impressive career. 8 albums and 4 labels later, this female force of nature finally owns her entire discography and is ready to be the maker of her own destiny.

This new album is a crescendo of all her years immersed in music and an intimate knowledge of the many ways this industry, this world can break your body and heart. While a track record that includes a Juno nomination, Fan Choice Award Win at the Prism Awards, and nominations for Album of the Year and Artist of the Year at the Gamiq Awards might satisfy some, Kandle is driven ever-forward by a determination to be a voice for the lonely and to follow her artistic instincts. It’s no wonder legends like Peter Dreimanis, Devon Portielje, Sam Roberts and even Jack White have collaborated with her. Never one to repeat herself or stick to safe, tried-and-true radio friendly approaches, Kandle explores new sonic influences and collaborations to create her strongest album yet, one that is completely vulnerable and unwaveringly honest; an ode to the darkness that surrounds us and the connections we find in it together. Hypnotic, sexy, vulnerable, edgy, and raw from start to finish. One cannot simply put this artist in some narrow category.

One such connection was forged on the set of her music video “Lock and Load”, where Kandle first met eventual partner – at first in personal and then also in music – Jeffrey Mitchell. Jeffrey is a multi-disciplined filmmaker who has worked in the film and TV industry for nearly a decade. Jeffrey has also been a multi-instrumentalist and closet composer since childhood. While he initially worked with Kandle solely in a visual capacity, as their personal connection deepened, this secret musical talent was finally revealed to Kandle after being thrown on stage filling in for a missing band member for 3 nights at the legendary Horseshoe tavern in Toronto. The two then began writing, producing, and playing music together, inevitably leading to their deeply collaborative work on this newest album.

In making such a drums-forward album, Kandle and Jeffrey knew they had to seek out the best. Forging the beats that drive the album onward, we find 21 year old Yato Noukoussi (also known as Young Killa), a young drummer and beat maker from Vancouver, Canada. Raised in a musical family – his dad is a professional West African percussionist and producer – Yato developed a deep musical understanding and creative edge from a young age. He is well-versed in a variety of genres: jazz, hip-hop, trap, West African, R&B, pop and punk. Yato is quickly gaining recognition for himself in the Vancouver music scene as a virtuoso in the making.

Together this deadly trio have created an album unlike anything being released right now. It’s music that spreads fire across your soul, heart, and loins. Pairs well with whiskey, blue hour, strong coffee, and the bedroom.
