Song Premiere : ‘When I Steal Your Heart’ by Josh Mover & The Shakers

From The Artist : “At the time that I wrote “When I Steal Your Heart,” like the other songs on this record, I was trying to come to terms with a relationship that ended; I was also listening to quite a bit of Tom Lehrer. I particularly liked how he subverted the expectations of the genre he played in – singing really dark, often tongue-in cheek lyrics over these poppy, piano arrangements. So when I heard his tune “I Hold Your Hand In Mine” the idea came to me to write an anti-love song from the perspective of a psychopath who’s going to take their lost love’s heart, and sell it on the black market. The song in no way, shape, or form intends to encourage violence, but if you are ever feeling really down or worthless, it can serve as a good reminder that you’re worth plenty – somewhere out there, someone would pay over $100,000 for your ticker! (I googled that. Apparently that’s what a heart goes for on the black market. What a world!)”

The ‘Into a ghost’ EP is the debut offering from Toronto indie-rock outfit Josh Mover & The Shakers. The new propulsive indie rock tune ‘When I Steal Your Heart’ incorporates an americana shuffle with a punk rawk heart. The lyrics portray a Magnetic Fields wit, but also that band’s way with melody. Bursting forth with frayed hooks and ramshackle guitar interplay, ‘When I Steal Your Heart’ creates an intimacy that transports you into the room it was recorded. You get a sense of each player ticks through each strumed nuance. And it’s these players that let the song shine through, never obscuring its pitch black satire. The juxtaposition between the upbeat rock n roll and the dark undercurrents is on full display. and we’re all the better for it. Our hearts are better for it.

Josh culled together his close friends and talented toronto rock alumni to play on the new EP. Ben Reinhartz (Dilly Dally) is behind the kit and Mathew Wronski (The Sulks) lays down the bass — while Joseph Landau (ex-formalists) Will Hunter (The Nutrients) and Clara Klein round out the line-up. Mastered by David Newfeld (Broken Social Scene) and recorded and mixed at Union Sound Company by Ian Gomes (Odonis Odonis, Teenanger), this record was all recorded in two days in early September and was largely fueled by Figs Breakfast on Queen east. Debut EP “Into a Ghost” set to be released on February 16th, 2018 with a ep release party on Feb 23, 2018 at the Monarch Tavern.
